Our Founders

Socks for Shelters was founded by sisters Sonya and Sabrina, who began this initiative in 2018. Their passion for service has only grown since their first sock drive. They continue to seek meaningful ways to give back to their local NYC community. Socks for Shelters is now a 501(c)3 organization and has collected and donated thousands of socks to NYC shelters since its inception.

Sonya G.

Sonya, an avid basketball player with a love for ankle socks, found her inspiration in an unexpected moment while watching Legally Blonde. Elle Woods’ determination to use her unique perspective to help others resonated deeply with Sonya, sparking her own desire to make a difference. This led her to create Socks for Shelters, a nonprofit dedicated to providing socks to those in need. Starting with a sock drive in fifth grade that collected over 500 pairs, Sonya felt a profound sense of purpose when she saw the joy her efforts brought to others. Today, her initiative continues to grow, combining her passion for service with a commitment to her community.

Sabrina G.

Sabrina, who helped start Socks for Shelters with her sister in second grade, is now a passionate middle schooler. She loves playing badminton, experimenting with makeup, and wearing colorful fuzzy socks—especially during the winter. Sabrina is excited to support those in need and hopes to inspire her classmates to donate and get involved with her charity, spreading warmth and kindness one pair of socks at a time.
